GP. PRACTICE PATIENT SURVEY

GP Practice Patient Survey 2008. Released 16th July 2008
The Department of Health has released the results of the nationwide GP Practice Patient Survey 2008; a postal survey which was carried out at the beginning of the year.
Nationally, over 5 million people were invited to take part in the survey, which asked patients for their own personal experiences of primary care, including how easy or difficult they find it to see or speak to a doctor at their practice. Over 2 million people responded.
More locally, of over 400 people who were contacted, a total of 216 people who are registered with Dr Palmer & Gardner’s practice responded to the survey, and the results are very pleasing.
The results have been published by the Department for Health, but a summary of the results is detailed below, with comparisons against both regional and national benchmarks.
Question 2 “In general, are you satisfied with how easy it is to get through to someone on the phone at your doctors surgery?” (Yes reply %)
Barlborough Medical Practice Result
National Average Result Regional Average Result
98.8%
87.4% 86.9%
Question 4 “Think about the last time you tried to get an appointment with a doctor fairly quickly. Were you able to get the appointment on the same day or the next 2 days the surgery was open?” (Yes reply %)
Barlborough Medical Practice Result
National Average Result Regional Average Result
93.7%
87.1% 88.8%
Question 6 “Last time you wanted to, were you able to get an appointment with a doctor more than 2 full days in advance”
(Able to book in advance if you want to) (Yes reply %)
Barlborough Medical Practice Result
National Average Result Regional Average result
95.7%
77.3% 75.4%
Question 8 “Last time you wanted to, were you able to make an appointment with a particular doctor – even if it meant waiting longer?” (Yes reply %)
Barlborough Medical Practice Result
National Average Result Regional Average Result
96.0%
87.6% 88.0%
Question 9 “Over the past 6 months or so, were you satisfied with the hours your GP surgery was open?” (Yes reply %)
Barlborough Medical Practice Result
National Average Result Regional Average result
78.9%
82.3% 83.0%
Question 10 “ For those who responded “NO” to question 9”: “I was dissatisfied with the hours the GP surgery was open because”
Not open early enough in morning Not open around lunchtime Not open on Saturday
16.1% 32.3% 45.2%
Question 11 “Think about the last time your doctor referred you to see a specialist. Did your doctor talk with you about a choice of hospital for your appointment ?” (Yes reply %)
Barlborough Medical Practice Result
National Average Result Regional Average result
69.6%
52.0% 63.9%
As you will see from the above results, the Practice fairs very well, when compared to both National and regional averages. In fact, in every question relating to access, the practice gives a better result than both National and regional results. This is very pleasing.
What is a little surprising, is that even though the practice scores higher than national and regional figures in every other question, the practice scores lower than national and regional average in question 9, relating to overall satisfaction with opening times.
As a practice we genuinely strive to offer a professional, friendly and efficient service, and have revised our opening hours to try and offer an even better service. There has been much media coverage recently of the Government vision for polyclinics. Our concern is that these will offer less continuity of service, as we believe the patient would rarely see the same GP or Nurse twice.
The Government say that these polyclinics will be in addition to existing GP surgeries, but it is not too difficult to imagine that this Government initiative will force at least some GP surgeries to close.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank those patients that responded to the survey, and we will as always continue to view this feedback with great importance.
Thank you from
